Our Approach

We take a glass-half full approach to our work - looking for what we've got to build with, what our community assets are and what needs to be done in the community. Our vision and our objectives help guide our work.

Our Vision

Sustainability: our way of life.

It’s a simple statement, but it carries a lot of important concepts in it. We believe Waiheke has the potential to be a true model of environmentally sustainable community, where living sustainably is the norm.

We use the World Commission on Environment and Development (The Brundtland Report) definition of sustainability: “…meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Our objectives – the formal stuff!

The Waiheke Resources Trust aims to educate and inform the community - as well as visitors and local businesses - on sustainable practice.

The purposes of the Waiheke Resources Trust are to:

  • Undertake projects, and programmes which maximise sustainable practice on Waiheke
  • Provide the Waiheke community with information and education to make ethical, effective and powerful decisions in respect of sustainability.
  • Undertake and generate community development initiatives on Waiheke for the benefit of people and our environment.
  • Provide training and assist people on Waiheke to gain knowledge and skills in sustainable practice.
  • Develop a model for small communities in sustainable practice.
  • Promote sustainability networks.
  • Undertake and support study and research in sustainability and, where appropriate, to publish the results.
