Food Resilience

We are really interested in the question – could Waiheke feed itself? The answer is, unfortunately, right now probably not. We look at this problem from a number of different angles – Firstly, how can we encourage growing food locally and, secondly, how can we stop the food we do have from being wasted.

The Garden Project

We have been working with Waiheke Budgeting Service on a project that encourages home gardening called ‘The Garden Project’.

Our beginners Gardening Guide includes information on the basics of gardening, including a planting guide especially made with Waiheke in mind. It is available for sale from the Waiheke Resorces Centre for $8.50.

Our garden makeovers help people without gardens to establish vege patches, and we have lots of information and products available for sale for all your on-going composting needs. We have also established a number of container gardens around our building where we prove you don’t need a lot of space to grow food. If you’re interested in getting into gardening please get in touch, and feel free to help yourself to some of the fresh veges from our gardens!
