Fisheries Policy Information Open Session

Following the Waiheke Marine Project Future Search Hui public expo, Matt Von Sturmer and Glen Carbines will be holding some Fisheries Policy Information sessions at the Waiheke Sustainability Centre from 3-5 pm Friday 4th and 1-3 pm Friday 11th December.

Restoring abundance to New Zealand’s coastal fisheries is the drive behind the ‘Rescue Fish’ proposal for fisheries reform developed by the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. Put simply; Rescue Fish means more fish in the sea!

The first hour of these information sessions will be showing a documentary move examining the real cost of fishing under a Quota Management System (QMS) and our declining coastal fisheries. The documentary explores how the QMS has failed to protect our marine environment and caused reduced abundance and a loss of ecosystem function for many species. From marine scientists, academics, Maori, environmental and advocacy groups, the message is consistent and clear – the QMS has failed all stakeholders, except for a handful of large companies controlling the system. We believe it is time to reform the current Fisheries Act, and that starts with a long-overdue review of the QMS.

After the documentary, there will be a 15-minute presentation on the Rescue Fish proposal for fisheries reform, information provided, and a chance for some discussion with the Waiheke community.
