Off the back of the work Citizen Scientists are doing to gather litter data, Sustainable Coastlines is piloting a new schools education programme that aims to create long-term solutions to litter in Aotearoa.
The programme is adaptable to Project-based, Place-based and Inquiry-based learning pedagogies that many schools are already familiar with. Sustainable Coastlines is using the issues of waste and litter as ‘gateway’ entry points to get students more deeply involved in solutions to environmental challenges. It provides professional development opportunities for teachers, and embeds behavioural change and influencing techniques into the learning process. At its core, the programme ensures that students get strong outdoor experiences to connect back with nature, while incorporating real-world contexts into their academic learning.
