Conventional compost, hot compost, Bokashi bins, worm farms . . . with so many different ways to compost organic matter it can be difficult to make sure you’re getting […]
Waiheke Resources Trust is based at the Sustainability Centre, which is a hub of activity in support of our projects including Kai Conscious Café, Kai Gardens, the community fridge and pantry, composting and septic system workshops and the Ecostore refill shop.
We're also in the community at zero-waste event stands, we provide a composting collection service to businesses and food rescue and redistribution. And, our wetland restoration work takes us to the far reaches of the island to clear weeds and plant native trees. Find out more about our projects.

Neighbours Day 2022
Waiheke's World of Food
It's back! And we're off to Denmark. Buffy Gill of Be Good Organics fame and our Meat Free Monday's Amanda Sorrenson will teach us how to make plant-based interpretations of dishes from their ancestral home, then enjoy them with you all. These events will run on a Sunday until we can get our usual Sustainability Centre slot back on Mondays. It'll be laekkert - that's yummy in Danish!

Sustainable living

Kai Conscious Cafe
Visit the Sustainability Centre on a Friday lunchtime and join a shared lunch prepared by our Kai Conscious cooks using rescued food from stores and eateries across Waiheke. Donate what you think it is worth, or what you are able, and contribute to reducing food waste and food poverty in our community.

Get composting
We can help you get you started at home with workshops, support and composting products including Bokashi systems and worm farms. We even sell our own compost and crushed shells for the garden. If you're a business looking to manage food scraps and compostables sustainably, we want to hear from you too. Visit the Sustainability Centre for supplies or get in touch.

Ecostore
Every time you refill an empty container - that's one less plastic bottle in the world and a bit more cash in your back pocket. Be clean and green by making the transition to Ecostore environmentally-safe household and personal products. As a responsible Waihikean, you'll also be protecting your waste water system as every product is septic-tank friendly.

Community fridge and pantry
The community fridge and pantry is just outside the Sustainability Centre door and it is open to all, 24/7. The Kai Conscious team stocks it with rescued food from local supermarkets and eateries several times a week. We also welcome any donations of surplus garden produce or food - pop them straight in! They are greatly appreciated by the community.

Volunteers and internships
Join one of our amazing projects and help restore our beautiful wetlands, reduce our food waste and support our community. There are plenty of activities to choose from and if you're more of an indoors person, there's lots going on in the Kai Conscious kitchen and WRT offices.

Book the Sustainability Centre
The Sustainability Centre supports community collaboration and the space can be booked by community groups and individuals. We have a projector, presentation space and a fully-equipped kitchen including cookware. (Please note that the we do not host birthday parties). If you would like to add your event to our calendar, make a booking.
